The latest figures from
the Pakistan National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA)indicate a
continued rise where, 1,677 people have died; with 2,605 people
reported as injured; 1,248,704 homes damaged and an estimated 17.4
million have been affected.
This is a disaster that
continues to unfold. Flood waters may be receding in some areas but new
areas continue to be affected. The monsoon rains are predicted to
continue for at least a few more weeks.
According
to the recent govt. report, more than 3.5 million children are at risk
from waterborne diseases, such as: skin diseases, respiratory infections
and malnutrition which spread quickly through flooded areas.
Future health problems are expected to increase due to the recent
displacement of millions because of major flooding that has continued in
the past four weeks. These problems are compounded by the overall impact
on the country's medical system which is suffering from serious
financial problems.
